OBKA Winter Talk – Differences in sub-Saharan and UK beekeeping

13th November 2020 @ 19:00 - 20:30

We are delighted that Richard Ridler, Master Beekeeper and Chair of Bees Abroad, will be presenting to us from his home near Saffron Walden in Essex.

Richard will talk about beekeeping in sub-Sharan Africa where it can change lives in the poorest of rural communities. He will explore how the climatic, physical, economic and cultural differences affect the practices of beekeeping. He will touch on everything from small hive beetle and hive design to catching swarms and making propolis tincture.

This year is the 21st anniversary of Bees Abroad. In that time they have worked with local delivery partners in 15 countries helping to lift 50,000 people out of extreme poverty. Their projects make beekeeping a sustainable additional source of income to buy household essentials, medicines and pay school fees.

Before joining Bees Abroad Richard was chair of Essex BKA, a post now held by his wife Jane also a Master Beekeeper. Together they have several apiaries and include Warre, Flow and Top Bar Hives amongst their WBCs.

This will be a Zoom session, details will be emailed out nearer the time.
