Oxford Science Event to mark World Bee Day (20th May 2023)
OBKA has supported Science Oxford, a local educational trust based in Headington Quarry Oxford, for the past three years by talking to groups of children about honey bees. The centre works with primary aged children, mainly local school groups during the week and family groups at weekends. This year we worked with their nature club, where the theme was bees and pollinators to coincide with World Bee Day. The centre’s staff, led by Alice, talked about bumble bees and other pollinators and helped the children make wax candles while I, supported by Yvonne Parks and Paris Michaelides, talked about honey bees, and showed the children our observation hive and various beeswax artifacts. Finally, and always very popular, we let everyone sample honey, set and runny lime honey from 2022 and some new season comb honey.
I would like to thank Yvonne and Paris for supporting me (Richard Stansfield).
