OBKA Honey Show 10 Nov 2024

This year’s show was bigger and better than ever; we had 106 entries from 18 members. This made the event a ‘Blue Ribbon‘ event which is an award sponsored by the National Honey Show and may be awarded by a qualified Honey Show judge at an Association’s Honey Show if there are more than 100 entries, which was achieved this year for the first time in many years

Heather Horner was awarded the Blue Ribbon for the Best Exhibit in show as well as the Goodbun Cup honey classes, the James Cup for wax products and Sims Bowl for the culinary classes.

Gillian Oliver won the Sandford Cup for a mixture of classes.

The Paterson Cup, the novice trophy, went to Sarah Abllet who was also awarded a National Honey Show Blue Ribbon for Best Exhibit by a Novice.

The Campbell Cup, the under 30s award, went to Oxford High School.

Many thanks to our expert judge Claire O’Brien who had her work cut out with so many entries! Once judging had finished she gave a brief summary of how she judged the exhibits along with useful hints and tips on how an exhibit could be improved. We also thank Dawn and Daniel McGuinness for the vital task of running the kitchen providing tea, coffee and biscuits, and who also helped with the paperwork.

We are most grateful to Professor Geraldine Wright, Hope Professor of Entomology at Oxford University and OBKA’s President, who gave a brief talk about her work at the Oxford Bee Unit. Geraldine also presented the cups to the winners and BBKA Certificates.
